Colorado Summers Are No Picnic!

May 2002 – Forget the ants, there are plenty of other problems that go hand-in-hand with summertime in Colorado. The Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association has selected its top insurance nightmares that can ruin summer fun faster than you can say, "pass the ketchup!"

• Swimming Pools. Sure a dip in the pool sounds cool, but if it's in your backyard do you know your personal and financial risks?

• Dog Bites. Summer weather draws more people and pets outdoors, making it the peak season for dog bites. Is your pet covered by insurance if it bites someone? What are your coverage limits and liability?

• Vacations & Insurance. Are you protecting your home while you're away? Do you need travel insurance? Are your packed belongings and luggage covered by homeowners insurance? Do you really need to buy insurance on a rental car?

• Summer Weddings & Parties. If you play host this summer make sure you take steps to limit your liability.

• Home Remodeling. Summer is the best time to add a deck or a new addition. If you change the value of your home, make sure insurance coverage keeps up with the cost to rebuild it.
