In An Effort To Promote Safe Driving, Colorado State Troopers & Teenagers Exchange Prom Promise: "We’ll Give Up Donuts If You Agree to Not Drink and Drive During Prom & Graduation Season."

May 2000 - The "Great Donut Exchange" will take place on the west steps of the State Capitol at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 4th. The stakes are high for Colorado State Patrol Officers—give up their precious donuts during April and May. The stakes are even higher for Colorado teenagers—their lives are on the line during prom and graduation season. The "hole" idea being promoted by the State Patrol, the local insurance community and S.T.A.N.D., is to have some fun with the old stereotype that every cop has the smell of donuts on his breath and at the same time remind teenagers that they have life and death choices to make when they get behind the wheel. Like law enforcement officers, many teenagers also don’t fall into the stereotype of not being responsible drivers.

Colonel Lonnie Westphal, a group of CSP Troopers, and representatives of S.T.A.N.D. (Students Taking A New Direction) will each take an oath delivered by a metro court traffic judge. A ceremonial "donut exchange" will follow. Col. Westphal hopes that by poking fun at an old joke we can send a serious message. "Spring is a time to celebrate for many young people—high school and college graduation, prom and just the end of the long school year, says Chief Westphal, "We hope this serves as a positive reminder that these precious milestones can all too often end in tragedy."

WHAT: The Great Donut Exchange

WHEN: Thursday, May 4th, 10 a.m.

LOCATION: West Steps of the State Capitol

Of course, coffee & donuts will be served!
