INSURANCE INDUSTRY RECOGNIZES HELICOPTER PROGRAM FOR SAVING LIVES AND PROPERTY DURING COLORADO'S 2002 WILDFIRE SEASON.
November 13, 2002 - 2002 was the most costly wildfire season in Colorado history, resulting in more than $70 million in damage to homes and personal property. But, for every home lost, hundreds more were saved, due in large part to the heroic efforts and fire management expertise of Colorado firefighters. And in several cases, it cost them their lives.
The Rocky Mountain Interagency Helicopter Program (RMIH), based out of Boulder Municipal Airport, was ready to go with air support when Coloradoans needed it the most. During the insurance industry's annual "All Industry" Luncheon on Thursday, November 14, 2002, the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association (RMIIA) will present its annual Human Concern Award to representatives of the helicopter program for their extraordinary efforts to save lives and property during the most devastating wildfire season in the state's history. Established in 2001, the Rocky Mountain Interagency Helicopter Program is the only locally based helicopter program on the Front Range. It is an interagency effort that is managed by several fire departments and funded through public and private donations.
"During this wildfire season we asked firefighters to put themselves in harms' way and, in some cases, even sacrifice their own lives to protect our lives and property," says Carole Walker, Association Executive Director. "The fact that many, many more homes didn't fall victim to the flames is due in large part to the efforts and forward thinking of our fire departments. The least we can do is say, 'thank you'." Marc Mullenix, RMIH Program Manager, Boulder Fire Department; Mike Tombolato, RMIH Helicopter Manager; Justin Dombrowski, Boulder Fire Department will be present to accept the Human Concern Award.
